Can You Tell Me The Way?

Coming Together

Up to now we have been considering our individual relationship with God. However this transformation of our lives into the Christ-like character through the Holy Spirit is being experienced by others. My affinity with God leads to an affinity with all his people. Now we belong to God, so we belong to each other. Now we continue our journey as part of a community. Many may say, "But I have been part of a church for a long time, and it is with others that I have worshipped God, and learnt all that I know of spiritual things." That is true, but we come into fellowship at different times in our lives. We have delayed exploring this part of our journey so that we can consider and experience it together, as a people who are united. It is this togetherness that we shall be emphasising now. However, if our lives as part of a community are to be fruitful, they need that firm foundation of a personal walk with God. Therefore from time to time it is a good idea to look back on those earlier aspects of our journey, to remember the Cross, and how we are in Christ and he is in us. We share fellowship life because we belong together and need each other. In our church life we have to give as well as receive. We need to have a concern for others, to help, support, encourage and pray for all who are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Part Seven

The Family of God

One aspect of the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit is to convince us that God is our Heavenly Father, and then help us to relate to him and worship him in an appropriate way. We have become part of his family, along with all the rest of his children, those who believe in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. These are our brothers and sisters in Christ, and we belong together with a common bond. As we love God, so we should love all our fellow Christians, people of all races and nationalities.
